Climbing Kilimanjaro is a bucket-list achievement for many adventurers. Unlike other high peaks, Kilimanjaro requires no technical climbing skills, making it one of the most accessible summits for trekkers. However, its extreme altitude and challenging conditions demand physical preparation and mental determination. There are several routes to the summit, each offering unique experiences:
Arrive with morning flight to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) where you will be met and greeted by an Armadillo Adventures staff. After clearing customs and immigration, you'll be driven to your hotel in Arusha. Meet your private safari driver/guide after breakfast and be chauffeured to Tarangire National Park, home to one of the largest elephant populations in Africa. Explore the park's unique features including giant baobab trees, some over 1000 years old.
After breakfast, the next destination is Marangu Gate for registration. Your trek commences with a leisurely ascent through a vibrant rainforest, where you can catch a glimpse of the enchanting blue and colobus monkeys. The well-maintained trail gradually leads you to Mandara Hut, where you will spend your first captivating night
The hike continues through the rainforest and into the moorland zone, where the landscape opens up and the vegetation changes. You’ll enjoy views of Mawenzi Peak and the surrounding scenery. The trail is steady and climbs gradually, leading you to Horombo Hut.
To improve your chances of reaching the summit, it’s essential to spend an extra day at Horombo Hut for acclimatization. You can take a short hike to Zebra Rocks (about 4,000m) or rest and enjoy the stunning views. This day helps your body adjust to the altitude, reducing the risk of altitude sickness.
Today’s trek takes you through the Alpine Desert zone, characterized by sparse vegetation and dramatic landscapes. The altitude makes the trail more challenging, but the gradual ascent helps with acclimatization. You’ll arrive at Kibo Hut in the afternoon, have an early dinner, and rest in preparation for the summit attempt
Summit day begins around midnight. You’ll start with a challenging ascent to Gilman’s Point (5,685m) on the crater rim, a steep climb with loose scree. From there, it’s a gradual climb to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. Reaching the summit at sunrise is a magical experience. After celebrating and taking photos, you’ll return to Kibo Hut for a short rest and then continue down to Horombo Hut for the night.
The final day involves a long descent through the moorland and rainforest to Marangu Gate. The trail is more accessible on the way down, and you’ll pass through Mandara Hut for a short break. At Marangu Gate, you’ll receive your summit certificates and celebrate your achievement. A vehicle will then take you back to your hotel in Arusha.
After a good night’s rest and a hearty breakfast, you’ll have time to explore Arusha or relax at the hotel. This time is crucial for rejuvenating your body and mind after the strenuous trek. Depending on your flight schedule, you’ll be transferred to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your departure. This marks the end of your unforgettable journey on the Lemosho Route, leaving you with a treasure trove of memories and experiences that will bring you a smile every time you recall them.
